New After School Arts Academy Classes

To keep the After School Arts Academy fresh & enriching for our kids, we will make a few schedule adjustments every ten weeks. This session we are introducing Eco-Art and Knit, Stitch, Weave! And, at the end of this session, which concludes at the end of February, we will host an After School Arts Academy Art Show!

Classes for this session are broken up into two age groups (5-7 and 8+).

Find the class schedule, which lasts until the end of February below: Each day in the Afterschool Arts Academy kids are given a snack, complete their homework and participate in Club-time, if they do not have homework. Club-time includes three fun zones: a craft, an organized game and a reading zone.

Monday: Culinary Arts and Players Rehearsals!

Chef Tracy will whisk kids through a safe and healthy, hands-on cooking class! After twenty years of working in restaurants such as, Bay Wolf, Zuni and Pizzaiolo, she started her own company, Culinary Jungle Gym. Since 2009, she has shifted gears to teaching children the art of cooking!

Tuesdays: Ceramics

Students head off to Clay Sculpture and get their hands dirty with master artists Phoebe Ackley and Blanka Solyts.

Blanka Solytos is a freelance ceramist and a credential art instructor. She graduated from the Institute of Arts and Crafts in Prague, Czechoslovakia, and she earned her BA in Liberal Arts at Holy Names University. As a ceramist, she exhibits her work all around the bay area. She is a passionate promoter of art education, teaching in private and public schools. For several years she has been directing the Art and Discovery Camp.

Phoebe Ackley is a primarily self-trained artist, making sculpture in ceramic clay, mixed media and painting. Her focus has been on the face and figure: portraits and figurative sculpture. She has worked with several well-known bay area artists on public art commissions. She also teaches after school art classes for Berkeley Unified School District.

Wednesdays: Mixed Media, Interior Decoration and 3-D Arts.

Students in the afterschool program get to take two classes on early day!

Players Rehearsal: Kids 7 and up can sign-up to write their own scripts and perform a play at the end of the session! Teaching-Actor Lissa Sherman teaches them how to put together a play from start to finish! Rehearsals are Mondays and Wednesdays
Kids 5-7 take Mixed Media with Daria Deutschbein and 3-D Arts with Doug Calderon

Students will work with a variety of materials making paper-crafts, collages, masks and other fun projects! Daria Deutschbein has over a decade of experience providing child care and mentoring for children of all ages at Aquatic Park pre school in Berkley, Ca. , at the Ducks Nest School Of Arts and Science in Oakland , Ca. and the YMCA in Oakland . She was coordinator of the children's court art activities for The Malcolm X Jazz festival in Oakland for the past 5 years. She now teaches Mixed Media for Studio One Art Center

Doug Caledron leads kids through 3-D arts working with clay, paint and other materials. Lean about shapes, dimensions and sculpture! He has been teaching visual arts and painting for 14 years and performing arts for 7 years. Doug has studied at California College of the Arts and Crafts, Sacramento State University and has taken many workshops on classroom management and professional development. Doug also continues to create comic strips.

Kids 8+ take Interior Decoration Alisa Cartner and Mixed Media with Daria Deutschbein

In Alisa Cartner's Interior Decoration class, she leads kids through a project per class. Each class every student gets to take home their own creation made especially for their room! Projects include: lava lamps, self-portraits inspired by Warhol, pillows, clocks, Chinese lantern streamers, Aprons, monogram wall letters, and more! Alisa Cartner graduated from California College of the Arts with BA in illustration, painting and drawing. She has worked for Studio One Art Center since 2007, as well as downtown for the Charter school Oasis High school.

After Interior Decorating kids 8+ get to take Miss Daria’s Mixed Media Class!

Thursday: Eco-Art Laura Herrera and Knit, Stitch, Weave with Annie Goodsill

Ages 5-7 take Eco-Art with Laura Herrera. Eco-art is a rapidly growing genre that fuses global environmental concerns with artistic function. This class will be will make projects with found and recycled materials. Parents are encouraged to donate any materials they might recycle, such as egg cartons, jars, and popsicle sticks.

Ages 8+ Annie Goodsill will be teaching a brand new class where students become textile artists. We will focus on using all different colored yarns, thread, string, and ribbons too. This is going to be a great opportunity to learn to knit a scarf for your favorite teddy bear, weave a placemat or wall hanging, create a Huichol Mexican yarn painting. This class is the place to learn how to sew and knit.

Fridays: Painting and Drawing.

Caledron and Cartner
will lead students through a study of observational art, and expressive abstractions.

Ages 5 to 7 take painting and drawing with Alisa Cartner. Cartner graduated from California College of the Arts with BA in illustration, painting and drawing. She has worked for Studio One Art Center since 2007, as well as downtown for the Charter school Oasis High school.

Ages 8+ take painting and drawing with Doug Caledron. Caledron has been teaching visual arts and painting for 14 years and performing arts for 7 years.
