Afterschool Arts Newsletter: Our Upcoming Holiday Season Events!

Dear Parents and Families,

We here at Studio One Art Center would like to thank you for supporting and participating in our new After School Arts program, The After School Arts Academy. Our Fall Harvest Art Camp is currently in full-swing, and I wanted to write to inform you about upcoming opportunities for the next session and to announce that registration for the next ten weeks is now open! So, give us a call to secure your spot through February, 2011!

The first opportunity is our Whacky Winter Holiday Play! Rehearsals begin on November 29th and will happen every Monday and Wednesday until the night of the big show on December 20th at 6pm! In order to participate in the play, Afterschool Players will be required to sign an agreement stating that they can & will attend all rehearsals. Children must be seven years and older to participate in the play. Contact us to receive the agreement form.

Another upcoming opportunity will be basketball! Swimming lessons will end for the winter season at the end of December and resume again on March 2nd. In the meantime, students will get the chance to participate in competitive basketball. Practice will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:30pm. The total cost for basketball will be a one-time flat rate fee of $30 dollars, which covers students' uniforms and an end-of-season trophy! One of our coaches will be the awesome Dezeree, our Recreation Leader that many of you already know. Teams will be based on age groups, so if your child is interested in basketball, please contact us. We will be compiling a count of all students interested in playing over the month of December. Practice starts the week of January 3rd!

January 3rd also unveils another great addendum to our programing: the After Schools Arts Academy for Middle Schoolers! This program carries the same fee as the K-5 After School Arts Academy, which is 15 dollars per day. Middle Schoolers will take in classes in Watercolor (Mondays), Eco-Art and Recycled Glass (Tuesdays), Ceramics and Wheel Works (Wednesdays), Voice and Choir (Wednesdays), Darkroom Photography (Thursdays), and Culinary Arts (Fridays). Help us spread the word and call to register your middle schoolers! In addition to their art classes, middle schoolers will get to participate in all the normal sports options that are available to our K-5 programs.

I have received a few questions about pick-up policies. Our policy at Studio One Art Center is to never let a child leave our building with anyone who is not given permission do so in writing on a child's Emergency Form. Feel free to call us with any additional permissions, if you cannot update your form in person. This is a service that we provide for you, in order to ensure the security of all of our Afterschoolers. You may add as many people to your form as you like. The other question I wanted to answer was our policy regarding absences. You may receive a refund for the day your child is absent, if you notify us via phone, voicemail or email before ten am on the day of the absence. Our transit is planned on a budget, and so we must provide accurate totals to keep our program costs affordable for everyone.

Another option available to everyone in the After School Arts Academy is participation in the Comcast Holiday Parade! Want your child to dress up in costume and be in the parade? For more information about registering, costumes, and transit, call Renee Tucker 510.597.5081. Those that do need a ride to the parade can receive transportation from Studio One Art Center, but kids will need to be picked up from the parade at the end of the event. Registration code: 34142.203

If you haven't yet registered for the December weeks of the Afterschool Arts Academy, do so soon! Why? Because we are going caroling on a Water Sleigh at the Lake Merritt Boat House on 8th @ 2:30pm. The boats have limited capacity, so there is only room for 16 students. Please call and sign-up your child for caroling on the water sleigh as soon as possible, as the spaces are first come, first serve. In order to confirm your spot, please fill out the permission slip, which will be available at the center. If you cannot come by, we can always email you a slip.

When school is out, Art's In! So, don't forget to secure your spot in our Winter Break Art Camps! Spots are already filling up. Camp hours are Monday-Thursday 9am to 5pm during the weeks of December 20th and December 27th.

Thanks again for your support, and we look forward to a dynamic Holiday season and an artsy 2011 at Studio One Art Center.
