After School Arts Academy

At a Glance!

Parent Information: After School Arts Academy starts off with an hour of homework. Afterward, they enjoy a lite snack and finish their homework with assistance from tutors. Each day your child will get to participate in one in-depth fine arts class. Pick-up is between 6:00pm and 6:30pm every day!

Monday

3:30-4:15 Tutors & Snack

4:35-5:55 Cooking(all ages)

6:00-6:30 Game time/pick-up

Students arrive after school from all over Oakland for a quick break to shake off the school day. After snack and homework time, students head off to Culinary Arts class to bang around pots and pans with Chef Traci Hurlow!


Chef Tracy will whisk kids through a safe and healthy, hands-on cooking class! After twenty years of working in restaurants such as, Bay Wolf, Zuni and Pizzaiolo, she started her own company, Culinary Jungle Gym. Since 2009, she has shifted gears to teaching children the art of cooking!

Tuesday

After snack and homework time, students head off to Clay Sculpture and get their hands dirty with master artists Phoebe Ackley and Blanka Solyts


Blanka Solytos is a freelance ceramist and a credential art instructor. She graduated from the Institute of Arts and Crafts in Prague, Czechoslovakia, and she earned her BA in Liberal Arts at Holy Names University. As a ceramist, she exhibits her work all around the bay area. She is a passionate promoter of art education, teaching in private and public schools. For several years she has been directing the Art and Discovery Camp.


Phoebe Ackley is a primarily self-trained artist, making sculpture in ceramic clay, mixed media and painting. Her focus has been on the face and figure: portraits and figurative sculpture. She has worked with several well-known bay area artists on public art commissions. She also teaches after school art classes for Berkeley Unified School District.

Wednesday

4:20-5:40 Drama (ages 5-7)

After snack and homework time, students mix it up in Mixed Media with Daria Deutschbein, followed by a play break. After break, younger students act it out in Drama with Lissa Sherman, while older students get a more advanced course in the culinary arts.


Daria Deutschbein has over a decade of experience providing child care and mentoring for children of all ages at Aquatic Park pre school in Berkley, Ca. , at the Ducks Nest School Of Arts and Science in Oakland , Ca. and the YMCA in Oakland . She was coordinator of the children's court art activities for The Malcolm X Jazz festival in Oakland for the past 5 years. She now teaches Mixed Media for Studio One Art Center


Lisa Sherman is a graduate of the MFA Acting Program at California Institute of the Arts. Sherman directed and conceived Pirates and Ninjas for the Cal Arts New Works Festival with remounts at Theatre of NOTE in North Hollywood and A.N.T. Fest at ARS NOVA in Manhattan. She has worked as a teaching artist with Marin Theatre Company, East Bay Center for the Performing Arts, Stage Door Conservatory and Society of Young Inklings, as well was promotional work with TheaterMama for Cirque Du Soleil’s new production OVO.

After snack and homework time, students groove to funk, jazz, modern and salsa with artist teacher Corissa Johnson.


Corissa graduated with honors from California State University, East Bay Hayward, where she obtained a degree in Theater Arts and Dance.

Corissa has danced, performed, and choreographed for 10 years and has extensive training in Hip Hop, Modern, Jazz and Salsa. She teaches all over the bay area, including Hayward at CSUEB, Danville for Lori Buffalow’s Next Step Dance Studio and Studio One Art Center.

Fridays at Studio One all about line and color with Alisa Cartner’s Painting and Drawing Class.


Alisa Cartner graduated from California College of the Arts with BA in illustration, painting and drawing. She has worked for Studio One Art Center since 2007, as well as downtown for the Charter school Oasis Highschool.


Cartner will lead students through a study of observational art, and expressive abstractions.


Doug Caledron has been teaching visual arts and painting for 14 years and performing arts for 7 years. Doug has studied at California College of the Arts and Crafts, Sacramento State University and has taken many workshops on classroom management and professional development. Doug also continues to create comic strips.
